In New York, tens of thousands of Jewish children in the most orthodox yeshivas are not receiving a basic education, with many often finishing school without being able to read or write in English.
Unorthodox Education, a 40-minute documentary created by Jewish filmmakers, lifts the curtain on schooling in Hasidic and Haredi communities, through interviews with people who have left the ultra-Orthodox world as well as journalists, academics, and advocates, revealing the human cost of actively depriving kids of a secular education while chronicling a decade-long political struggle for these children.
Immediately following the film, there will be a talkback where those involved in the film will explain the process, challenges, and joys of making the film. There will be time to ask questions, get updates, and delve deeper into this complex issue.
